OK! I finally got the it working! Well, I can now write to
childCanvas. Haven't got scrolling to work yet, but that doesn't seem
like it would be too difficult to implement (just a matter of calling
XMoveWindow, right?)

Basically, what I did was after creating childCanvas, I had to use
XSelectInput to specify what events I want childCanvas to respond to.
Then I had to register callback routines for non-XForms windows by using
fl_set_event_callback and fl_add_event callback. Reason why I couldn't
write to childCanvas before, I guess, was that you need to do write
operations when an Expose event is generated and the Expose event for
childCanvas wasn't being handled.

Well, I'm glad that part is over!
