I had the same problem with Linux and Gimp. It disappeared when
I used an Xserver with more than 8 bits color depth. The accelerated
Xservers (S3, W32, ...) don't support it. Use the standard SVGA
server (XF86_SVGA) and start it with
startx -- -bpp 16
(8, 16, 24, 32 are possible). Maybe, you will have to run
"xf86config" again. And take care that some modes and screens
are generated for at least 16 bpp.

BTW: I heard that the next release of X (XFree86) will support
more color depths and an accelarator is built in! Should be out
soon...
