And furthermore, if you're using emacs as your editor (WHAT? You mean
you're not??? :-) ), emacs is aware of both RCS and SCCS and will do
the check out and check in automagically for you at a keystroke.
Check the emacs online info under Version Control.
In any case RCS and SCCS are pretty easy to learn and use.
