You are quite correct. My apologies for the confusion. I *knew* I
should have tested the code or at least checked my source archives
rather than rely on memory.
This is what my code actually looks like:
if ( object->objclass == FL_BEGIN_GROUP )
while ( ( object = object->next )->objclass != FL_END_GROUP )
modify_object( object );
