I use fdesign to generate many forms in a single .fd file and it works
okay for me, but I'm on a SunOS 4.1.4 system, so there might be a
difference (though I confess I'd be hard pressed explain it if there
was).

This is with a previously created .fd file? Can you post a small
example .fd file which exhibits this behavior?

Track geometry turns on "on-the-fly" geometry readout on the fdesign
form, so it would be no surprise that this would have no effect.
