Many thanks to several who offered help and suggestions.
The problem with not being able to find the commands was that I had
not done a "make install" in DEMOS. DOH
It was the addition of -L/usr/X11R6/lib to the gcc that made my
Hello World application compile. It has to be X11R6, too, not X11.
