XForms: depths and visual class

platform: RedHat Linux

I'm trying to make an xform window 8 bit. If I try to set the preferred visual
depth via the FL_IOPT structure ( see app A of the docs) I get a 'bogus
request' warning. When I try to show my 8-bit image on the now default 16 bit
window I get a Badmatch error.

Why won't the fl_set default option hold?
