xpm is in the shared library mainly because on some platforms,
the shared library has to be self-contained, i.e., no unresolved
references (most likely I haven't figure out how to do that).
Another reason is with a shared library, sucking in only the
needed xpm routines does not prevent users from using other
versions of xpm library.
