Actually xyplot uses an algorithm similar to Paul Heckbert's, given in
_Graphics Gems_ (Volume I), "Nice Numbers for Graph Labels," which is
pretty standard. I'm not sure what it uses in log mode, offhand.

What I'd really like to see is an option that says "use *my* tick
marks, *dammit*." For instance, in image histograms where the range
is 0 - 255, xyplot gives me a "nice" upper limit of 300, which looks
funky. I'd like ticks at 0, 16, 32, ... but xyplot won't give them to
me. :-/
