I have had the same effect after installing a new Suse-Linux-Distribution
on an other Computer.
Use your old .Xmodmap file and have a look at /etc/XF86Config section Keyboard.
My .Xmodmap (complett)
keycode 64 = Meta_L
keycode 0x6D = Multi_key
My XF86Config (partial)
XkbModel "pc102"
XkbLayout "de"
XkbVariant "nodeadkeys"
Hope it helps
