Yes. In fact, most of that is already done.

I do it in two passes (a map generation step and an indexing step)
simply to allow multiple pixmaps to be generated with the same
Colormap.

I promised to get this thing out into pbulic about 6 months ago -- I guess
I should get on the stick and do it.

I'll try to hack up some documentation and put it into usable package over
the next couple of days.
