For general insights, you may want to fetch the definite treatise on the X
PixMap format "XPM Manual: The X PixMap Format. (c) Group Bull, 1989-95", by
Arnaud Le Hors, the creator of the X pixmap format (it also includes nice
tutorial on using XPM.) You can get it from 'ftp://ftp.x.org'.
