Actually, I think this is in the X server, not XForms. I also get a
similar error (X_CreateWindow) when I try to run LyX remotely from a Linux
box to an SGI.

When running locally (on the Linux box) LyX runs perfectly
(statically-linked executable with XForms 0.81); but if I try to run it
from the SGI (IRIX 5.3) it blows up with that kind of error. There are
some options in /usr/lib/X11/xdm/* which specify the default visual on SGI
machines; on the machine I use it is set up to use a 24-bit TrueColor
visual by default; apparently many programs don't like this (they expect
an 8-bit PseudoColor visual). The Linux box doesn't have this problem as
it only has an 8-bit screen.

Well that's just my theory..
