Yup, that was it. We've been corresponding off list on this and all
he has is a single 16-bit TrueColor Visual available.

Another thought: I believe that some Linux/XFree systems allow you to
configure the X server at startup. It may be possible to coerce the
server into giving you a different set of available Visuals. Maybe
one of the Linuxers can help out here (Doug -- are you still around?).
