Ok, here is a somewhat touchy topic - I will try
to handle it gracefully :-)

>From the October 1997 issue of the Linux Journal, Letters
to the Editor:

"This is a response to an article...titled 'Programming
with the XForms Library':

How can you [Linux Journal] encourage people to write
programs using the XForms library? Since the sources
aren't free, only a selected range of platforms are
supported.

[Incorrect stuff about a.out object format not being
supported by XForms deleted]

In my opinion, this is contrary to the spirit of those
who developed Linux initially. It was meant to be a
free Unix system based on free tools and a free kernel.
(Maybe with one exception, Motif, which is an established
standard for nearly every available platform.) XForms
doesn't fulfill this criterion."

Of course XForms is not tied to Linux at all. But I somewhat
agree with the last paragraph of the letter, except for the
part about Motif being an exception - why should it?
Is there any plan to release XForms in source code form? What are the
reasons it is not? Is the library really licensed by a lot of
commercial developers? Is XForms trying to compete with the
commercial clients who currently use Motif?

Certainly XForms is one of the nicest GUI libs available, and I
for one would like to see it become more widely used. Is the
fact that the code is unavailable going to impede the usage
of the package? Just curious,

-bob
