Having explored a little more this seems to be a more general bug
associated with return buttons!

Briefly, I have now seen on a number of occasions if I use the keyboard
return to activate a RETURN button, then my X server gets screwed and seems
to emit a stream of return characters. In some instances this crashes
out back to the controlling console window, which is left scrolling
up with these phantom returns. You can also see that the behaviour is
wrong by running the butttypes demo that comes with xforms. Use keyboard
return to activate the RETURN button, and all manner of bizarness
occurs, with the button getting stuck down, freezing, logging multiple
hits etc.!
