To control the slider accurately, use set_slider_increment, in which
as you can specify exactly how much to increment when middle/right
mouse better is clicked. shift-mouse only slows down the rate
of increment, it does little for accuracy. Also when your
slider is about 80 pixels, and the range is 120, no matter
how you drag the mouse, there will be gaps/jumps. However
set_slider_increment does not suffer this as it works from
the value back to the pixels.

I see an opportunity to make the manual better.
