Not so, if you mean the `pattern' argument rather than `filetype'.
The pattern "*.*" will match only files with a '.' character in them,
whereas "*" will match anything. Thus, if you have the files "foobar"
and "foo.bar", the first will only match "foo.bar", where the second
will match both.
"*.*" is sort of an MSDOSism.
