If it is the background you are mostly interested in check out the way

Basicly you specify a pixmap that is under the dial and no background
for the dial. This allows you to make ANY dial faceplate you want. Check
it out at the above site, the source code is there also. The only thing
to beware of is that you must specify the pixmap FIRST in your GUI
building code, create it first if using fdesign. If you don't the pixmap
will be ON TOP of the dial at startup. The dial will not become visible
until you click the mouse over it the first time, then it comes on top
of the pixmap from then on.
