I also suspect that the problem has something to do with the display
setting, but we've tried everything we can think of in that area.

(More) seriously, the application has been ported to Sun Slowlaris, and SunOS,
Linux2.x, Irix6.4, and DEC alphas without problems, so I suspect that the problem
is more likely with the NT environment itself (including the cygwin32 stuff).
