You might be onto something, but then again, if you trashed
the stack or overwrote memory, seemingly unrelated part of
the program can suddenly misbehave, and you will spend more time
chasing the problem (perhaps by adding printfs, which most likely
will move the problem to a different part of the code).
The most productive thing to do in your case (IMHO of course)
is to get a debugging version of the malloc library.
