    Actually, I was somewhat hasty in my response regarding rotated text.

    There is provision for something called XLFD (X Logical Font Description)
    in X11R6 that will support rotated, sheared, mirrored, and scaled text.

    I have never messed with it and know only what is in the _Programmer's
    Supplement for Release 6 of the X Window System_ manual from O'Reilly
    and Associates (ISBN 1-56592-089-9). I'm not even sure how one would use
    it in conjunction with XForms, but it's worth a look.
