I ran it on my laptop, a Dell Inspiron 5000e running FreeBSD, and got
about 15 milliseconds minimum overhead for the select() call. On my
E420R Solaris boxes I'm seeing about 4 milliseconds. A zero
millisecond timeout runs at about 0.001 milliseconds on the laptop and
about 0.002 milliseconds on the E420R, which is probably pure clock
speed difference (the Dell runs at ~800 MHz and the Sun runs at 450
    MHz).

    I'll file your changes for V 1.1.
