I do not remember seeing this patch...

Do you know why the test fails on SGI-IRIX? The only reason I can see
is that the version in the xpm.h file (used in the #if) does not match
the one in the library (used in the original version). This would be
of course a bad configuration on your machine (and this does happens
on some badly configured systems where I work).
So if I were you, I'd check whether the library and headers match...
Anyway, the patch looks reasonable, so I think I'll apply it.
