To give you something to base your thoughts on, here are two patches.

slider_v1.diff is the counter version and slider_v2.diff is the 
timeout version. Personally, I prefer the timeout version, with the 
proviso that it needs
	void fl_set_slider_timeout(int millisecs);
	int fl_get_slider_timeout();

The same technique can be used for the counters class.
