<SNIP>
actually going back and reading the whole thread again[1] I believe they
finally went with what libtool wanted for what was compiled, but had some
softlinks setup. It erupted because they went to libtool 1.3.4 and it changed
some things.
Also part of their problem was that there are 2 version numbers for lestif,
one describes the lestif release, and the other describes the M*tif version
lestif is implementing. It was that libtool was not using the same M*tif
version number on all platforms, specifically on Digital Unix libtool wanted
to make it version 1.0.2 where it should be (and was on other platforms) 1.2.0
.

Sorry if this has lead down a wrong path.

the following have libtool mentioned in the comments.
configure.in & *Makefile.am 2001-08-29
acconfig.h acinclude.m4 configure.in CVSMake 2000-08-22
configure.in 1999-10-23 07:15

[1] I have my personal copy of the lestif mailing list back to August 99, from
which I sent Angus one of the messages that terminated the discussion on
lestif.
