I don't wish to be rude but frankly this makes absolutely no sense
whatever. In the [elided] code shown in the posting, any extra
whitespace characters would be absolutely benign.

You might do this in the case of a compiler syntax error of some sort
but as far as I can tell from the posting, this is not the case. The
problem is that XClearWindow() only has an effect *if* a background
pixel or background Pixmap is assigned to the window. If you don't
have either one, the functioni is effectively a no-op. Refer to the
manual page for XClearWindow for details.
