Are you running some other application which "eats" the colormap -- a
fancy background screen or Netscape, maybe? Are you asking for more
colors than your display supports? What depth frame buffers does your
system support? You can find out by typing

xdpyinfo

while logged in from the console.

If you have Netscape running then you'll see this kind of behavior if
you have only a PseudoColor Visual available.
