You did not specify which window manager (WM) you use. Some WM-s (as twm)
display BW icons instead of coloured. With fvwm, olwm and derived I have no problems
Another explanation is that the pixmap for icon may be BW itself. To check that,
assign pixmap to a pixmap object and see how it looks like
