`imake' doesn't "discover" anything. It just uses the rules in the
various `Imakefile's and the configuration files found in
`/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/config' (or its equivalent on your system) to set
paths. It also uses the search paths that built by default into your
C compiler and/or loader. It's hard coded into your configuration
files in that sense.
By "standard" I mean "standard for your system's X configuration, its
compiler, and loader."
I'll experiment some over the next couple of days if I get the chance
but I probably won't be able to since I have to turn my attention back
to some of the tasks that the good people of the National Institutes
of Health, the State of California, and the UC Board of Regents pay me
to do for the next little bit.
Again, if anyone has expertise with `autoconf' and would like to shoot
me some examples, I'd be happy to receive them.
